Denim will always be in style…but looking back at how we wore it might cause us to wonder exactly what we were thinking?! Take a look at some of these famous (and infamous) denim outfits over the decades. Did you ever rock any of these looks?
The 80’s were known for high waists, acid washes, and jean jackets sporting patches, tassels, and bows paired with neon tees – and lets not forget the hair. Those 80’s purses had to be big enough for your Aquanet and teasing comb! Headbands, banana clips, and big geometric earrings were the accessories of choice.
In the 90’s the rise of R&B, Rap, and Hip Hop to the mainstream had everyone wearing baggy jeans, overalls (one strap down, of course), and high end sneakers. All you needed to finish it off was a little lot of gold jewelry. Check out Destiny’s Child with Tommy Hilfiger, the king of 90’s fashion.
Nobody can forget Britney and Justin at the 2001 American Music Awards in head to toe matching denim outfits! For jewelry, the early 2000’s were all about the bling. Justin and Brit-Brit complete the look with sparkly, glitzy statement jewelry. I can honestly say, I’m glad this look did not stick around!
Finally, we have Miss Miley Cyrus in double denim for our current decade. She’s mixed a light denim top with dark jeans. If you want to tastefully break up all that denim, you can also pair your favorite chambray shirt with some leggings and boots – or colorful flats – it’s a classy but comfortable look!
SJ knows that it’s all about the details, so I picked some jewelry I think would perfectly polish off a modern double denim look! For instance, this gold toned deer necklace! Plain denim is the perfect canvas for fun, funky pieces that will get everyone talking. Of course, you don’t want to overdo it, so I’ve paired this bold statement necklace with pair of classic gold toned button earrings. Finally, I included one of SuperJeweler’s exclusive Octavia watches with a cocoa hued band – a perfect accessory to go with the rolled sleeves of your chambray shirt!
What denim looks do you remember? Leave me a comment, and you’ll be entered to win your choice of these three SJ pieces!

I have to agree with the 80s looks- what were we thinking indeed! I like the lower rise denim looks now- and still the classic denim jacket sans tassels and bows. In terms of jewelry- love the watch you have chosen!

Jeans were a staple in my wardrobe. Love the deer necklace and the watch.
I remember all of them quite well. Don’t want to go back to any of them I’ll stick to moving forward even though styles are cyclical. Out of the jewelry chosen, I love the watch, that I would wear all of the time!!
It’s the 80’s acid washed jeans that I remember the best.
Love the watch! Being more from the 60’s 70’s eras where we too had denim I can only give a preferred style lol, ours being on the whole pretty, I like the 1980’s style. Colour, flowers and still some of the 70’s style.
Denim has never left my style
Hash and Asmile bell bottom Jeans!
EEEK! Stone-washed peg-leg jeans with pleats at the waist and t-shirt tucked in!
I have had a bit of all of these!! I have had the embellished denim jacket as an 80’s baby and child – thanks to a ‘trendy’ mum! I lived in both the long & short versions of overalls in the 90’s with my oh so fashionable white short singlet. I rocked the long denim fish tail skirt in the 00’s. And in the 10’s I am still forever in my skinny jeans and even have a chambray & lace sleeveless button up shirt to top it off!!
I am truly a denim tragic but I would have it no other way and can’t wait to see what the next denim icon will be!!
I loved the 80’s and still have some clothes from then. The bell bottoms and jean jackets I remember best. I love your info and your picks. In Wisconsin deer are a big thing but I truly live the watch. Thank you
