Brittney’s Vintage Color Throwback Thursday

Everyday, SJ is honored to be part of some of the most important moments in people’s lives. Whether it’s a teenager purchasing a promise ring for his first girlfriend, or a wedding proposal – we never forget that we’re providing jewelry that signifies the love between two people, and that will carry the memories of a lifetime.

Planning is in high gear for those of you taking that walk down the aisle this spring or early summer – so we want to give you a little help in the way of inspiration!

Remember when finding the perfect dress meant finding the right pattern? No? Neither do I… but I wish I did! In the 1950’s the average wedding with a full reception and 150 guests cost $6,400. Compare that to the average 2015 cost, which is roughly $28,000, and it’s easy to see why even those of us who weren’t around back then are a little nostalgic for the mid-twentieth century!

This week’s throwback is inspired by warm mid-century hues! We can’t turn back the clock for you, but we can help you to pull together a fabulous wedding with ideas for thrifty finds. Take a look at these tastefully attired bridal parties wearing mix-matched dresses.

Weddings of the past often didn’t have the matchy-matchy fashion of modern weddings. In fact, bridesmaids were often told to wear their Sunday best for the big event.  You can intentionally stage a modern vintage theme by giving your bridesmaids a bit more freedom in their choice of dress. You just want to stay within a coordinating color pallet to avoid clashing. Remember, the more flattering their dresses – the better your pictures will turn out.

Our next tip? RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE! Just because something is old, doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful. If you have time before the big day, head out to thrift stores and yard sales, and think outside of the box. Turn old cake pedestals into amazing holders for flower arrangements, and if Pinterest is to be believed, mason jars are practically magic in their ability to be transformed.

Also, it’s fine to borrow! Entire families used to pitch in to help cook the food and decorate the venue. Trust me, the folks who pitch in now, will be thrilled when you return the favor. Besides, chances are, you’ll never find another use for that many containers and decorations – so ask mom and grandma if you can go through the attic. There’s no rule that says each table has to be identical – so just have fun with it. A wedding is supposed to be a joyous celebration… not an arduous chore.

SJ has the perfect accessories to pull it all together. We love helping soon-to-be brides and grooms find the perfect gifts for their bridal party! After all, what better memento than a beautiful piece of jewelry that they’ll always cherish?

I selected a few of my favorite gemstone jewelry pieces to add color and sparkle to a modern – vintage wedding. You won’t believe the price on our 8 Carat Oval Lemon Quartz Ring in Sterling Silver! This happy, yellow quartz ring will show your bridal party how much you appreciate their participation in your special day. For something a bit more subtle in color, I adore the blush of these 12 Carat Rose Quartz Pear Drop Earrings. Finally, if the neckline of their dresses allow it, this gorgeous 2 3/4 Carat Oval Green Amethyst Necklace is the perfect shade of spring green.

Of course, it could be fun in keeping with the mix-match theme to make each bridesmaid feel special and choose a unique item just for her!

Let SJ help to make yours a SUPER wedding day!

I love anything vintage! My mother was married in 1955 & wore a handmade white vintage ballerina length dress. She still has it and although it is dull from years of hanging in the closet in a garment bag, it is still as beautiful as she is.

My grandmother made my mother's wedding dress and I wore it for my wedding. I made a new veil and had to let the side seams out 1/2", but it fit beautifully. Knowing my grandmother sewed it, made it all the more special.

I agree - keep the costs down. Too many brides and grooms start out their married lives with debts from extravagant weddings and honeymoons.
Lori B. January 23, 2015 - 2:11 pm
That's how I had my wedding just 5 years ago (it was a second marriage) - got married in a small community centre. Had friends and family make the food, we all got together the day before and decorated the hall and then had a party that night at my parents house. I used seashells that I got from the beach on the tables (we were married down east) and got most of my decorations at yard sales and on ebay. It was a wedding on a budget and it turned out great! So much fun!
Monica Stewart January 23, 2015 - 2:20 pm

I especially love the necklace, but the other pieces are beautiful, too! Interesting article... especially how much it costs and even how much it cost back then to have a wedding... how does anyone afford it? I certainly haven't been able to... :( And we probably never will... still like to daydream about it sometimes, but other things are more important now, like getting a house and medical care and such. I think I'd better start saving for any future kids' weddings now! :O I love the colors and style of the photos you shared. Lovely stuff! It might be fun to be a wedding planner, but I'm not that organized, LOL.
Amelia Drew January 23, 2015 - 9:10 pm
love the colors!
Jeri E. January 24, 2015 - 4:14 am
I love Vintage looks and colors, and this stuff is gorgeous! We made just about everything for our wedding, and my bridesmaids didn't have to go buy an expensive dress...I let them pick any dress they already had, and told them I just wanted them to feel pretty and comfortable in it. We got a lot of compliments on our beautiful, but simple wedding, and we had NO debt when we were done, which was the best part! The jewelry pieces you've chosen are all amazing!! Thank you for the giveaway!
Carol Brown January 24, 2015 - 6:30 am

It's difficult to imagine the eclectic charm of mixing vintage, colorful, and recycled knick-knacks all together to create a beautiful tablescape but the pictures you pinned are beautiful! I can see where every aspect of your inspiration came from! I also know where that ring would look great :P hehe

I love the vintage look. The ideas of the old pattern s. The faded like colors. The Ring now that is something else. The Lemon color. When I got married I made all my decorations and had Winn Dixie make me a three tier cake and it was good. This was our second marriage between us and now its 28 years later. I am glad people are willing to share their ideas now. Its not the cost its the thought behind each item.
