When it comes to pop icons, Madonna’s in a league of her own! Born Madonna Louise Ciccone on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan, no one could have known this eldest daughter in a family of eight siblings would be a household name by her mid-twenties. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s, Madonna was at the forefront of music and fashion. She burst onto the collective pop scene in 1983 with her debut album, Madonna, which peaked at number eight on the Billboard 200. She reached international stardom with her second studio album, Like a Virgin in 1984 – helped by that famous (or infamous) wedding cake performance at the very first MTV Video Music Awards show. Of course, despite the scandal at the time, this would turn out to be one of Madonna’s (and the VMA’s) less provocative performances – but a moment in music history none the less.
I’ve borrowed a little inspiration from the Queen of Pop for this week’s Throwback Thursday! Madonna popularized the layered bracelet look back in the 80’s, so now that it’s back my first Madonna-inspired pick is SJ’s Rockstar Studded Mesh Bracelet. If you’re feeling edgy, you could even layer it with a pair of vintage lace gloves! Next, there’s no way to talk about Madonna and jewelry without mentioning her dangling cross earrings – like these from SuperJeweler. You can keep it classic – or mix it up like Madonna by wearing different styles in each ear! Finally, as you can see, Madonna hasn’t lost her ability to spot (or create a trend). Make them ask who’s that girl with some serpent style by rocking SJ’s Black Diamond Snake Pendent in Sterling Silver.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Madonna has had her share of detractors. There have been those who doubted her talent as a singer and actress, and others who have accused her of being everything that’s wrong with modern society. Despite the criticism, there’s no doubt that as an artist and a business woman, Madonna possesses an almost uncanny ability to know what the people want and how to give to them. She is the undisputed queen of reinvention. Over the decades, Madonna has demonstrated a chameleon-like skill for self transformation that has carried her through a multitude of relationships, career highs and lows, and personal incarnations. Through it all, she’s carried her fans and fashion with her – from those fingerless lace gloves to the (unfortunate) cone bra…from the Marilyn wanna-be phase, right through to the Evita years. Her fashion choices are rooted in her interests and passions. This along with her fearless individuality and determination to live life on her terms keeps her a few beats ahead of the curve – and makes her the ultimate fashionista!
