Throwback Thursday: Men’s Accessories

In today’s world of flip-flops and sweatpants, we often forget that it wasn’t so very long ago when folks believed the clothes made the man. My grandmother met my grandfather when she was a buyer for the department store he managed in post-WWII, Washington D.C. To this day, she swears that she fell in love with him because, “He always wore a hat, and carried an umbrella every day – just in case.”

So, tip back your fedora, light up a stogie, and grab a scotch while we take a look at a few masculine accessories of yesteryear and the men who rocked them!

The 1950s “Rat Pack” of the above-pictured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr. were well known for enjoying the finer things in life. They attended the hottest clubs, drank the best booze, and wore the finest clothes money could buy. They were also men who appreciated a truly nice piece of jewelry.

Sammy was especially fond of rings. One anecdote recalls the time that Elvis removed his own 52 carat black star sapphire ring during a Vegas show, and gifted it to his dear friend, Sammy Davis, Jr – who could often be found in attendance, standing on his seat applauding wildly.

Other stars of the era, like Clark Gable, preferred more subdued jewelry, like the simple pinky ring worn in the picture below.

Here are a few examples of some SuperJeweler men’s rings with all the glamour of Hollywood’s hay days – without the million dollar price tag!

A mid-century trend that’s been making a comeback are men’s bracelets. Unlike the more ornate and delicate bracelets that women prefer, men’s styles tend toward heavier, more industrial styles.

I don’t think the bracelets below, worn by Paul Newman, Elvis Presley, and Marlon Brando could ever be mistaken for feminine!

SJ has a fabulous selection of men’s bracelets with a wide range of designs and styles.

The men of the pre-tech era also tended toward functionality. Ladies may opt to be fashionably late…but a gentleman is always on time!

Despite having the time at our fingertips on our cells, laptops, and notebooks – there’s still something about a watch that says this man means business. Need evidence? Take a look at Sean Connery, Johnny Cash, and Michael Caine below. There’s no doubt that these men knew what time it was!

Happily, watches are another fashion accessory making a comeback for men and women! Click the image below to see more from our Octavius Collection!

Whether you’re President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, a comedy duo like Martin and Lewis, or an iconic pop-star by the name of Elvis Presley – one should never underestimate the importance of a good pen!

Now you can purchase quality keepsake pens from SuperJeweler for far less than you would pay at a brick and mortar jewelry store – they’re the perfect gift for any occasion!

If you’re inspired to spiff up your sweetheart’s wardrobe for Valentine’s Day, SuperJeweler carries a wide selection of items that are perfect for all the discerning gentlemen out there!

Leave a comment below, and one lucky winner will receive the Octavius watch or pen of their choice!

Melissa B February 6, 2015 - 1:07 am
In the days of Dean Martn, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Rock Hudson, Sammy Davis, etcetera, men dressed with style. Accessorizing for men was much more prominent then. Today we do not see so many men accessorizing with watches, bracelets, cufflinks, etcetera. It doesn't seem as important for men to be as fashionable as they were in this era. In my personal opinion, dressing the way they dressed then was much more flattering and attractive than jeans hanging down to their knees and tee shirts that are two times too big for them. I am hoping this style will come back one day because I find it to be a much more attractive and flattering look.
John Herman February 6, 2015 - 1:13 am

In my generation I didn't see very many men dress to the nines. But I definitely love to see a man in a nice suit with a classic statement piece of jewelry. You can tell that dressing to impress makes a big difference in how someone feels about themselves. But with Valentine's day coming up I think this would be the perfect time to pull out my husband's suit again.
Jeri E. February 6, 2015 - 4:20 am

All of these men were so stylish, clean cut, well groomed. Compared to today we see on men: stained tank tops, socks and sandals, ball caps turned backwards, pants hanging down, sweat pants, and tattoos coming out their ying yang, and piercings. My oh my, what has gone wrong with this world?

Tina Warren-Peoples February 10, 2015 - 3:24 pm
You had me at "Elvis"! I love watching old movies...back when men where always dressed nicely...even if they were just lounging on the sofa. I'm so sick of seeing young men with their "way too big for them" jeans down below their butts. It was bad enough when you just saw the top 2-3 inches of their underpants...now you see the whole pair!
Tammy Ramey February 27, 2015 - 6:48 pm
i love the fashions for men from back then. they were so suave and sophisticated. Now days it seems like your lucky if they can keeps their pants on over their hiney. LOL! most of the men and teens i know don't even own a suit, let alone know how to dress up enough to wear one. when i was growing up i remember that my Dad and Grandpa always had linen or cotton handkerchiefs in their pockets(dad still carries one), when i got married and we went to the tux rental he asked her if that should belong in my stuff. :( all i could think was how sad it was that we had fallen so far from good taste in mens fashion. i always had a crush on the Dean Martin growing up, i thought he was so cool and most of that came from the way had carried himself and took pride in his appearance. i wish more men would do that today. :) loved all the things Superjeweler had in the blog, they were beautiful. tammy ramey trvlagnt1t@yahoo.com
