Throwback Thursday: Jewelry Imitates Art

Art

Did you know that jewelry is greatly influenced by art? This week, I’ve decided to highlight some beautiful jewelry influenced by three distinct artistic eras. It’s amazing to see how our lives and cultures are influenced by the artistic styles of differing periods.

Baroque

Example of German Baroque architecture.

Example of German Baroque architecture.

Loosely translated, Baroque means elaborate. Though used now almost exclusively to reference an artistic style popular in the 17th and 18th century, originally the term baroque meant redundancy, excess, or an over indulgence of detail. In the case of Baroque art, it’s those excessive details that make it so impressive!

Between the years of 1590 – 1725 Baroque influence could be found in art, theater, architecture, music, and fashion – including jewelry.  The elaborate, intricate patterns that are the hallmark of Baroque design have made a comeback in recent years. In fact, I found the awesome Gold Tone Baroque Bib Necklace above in our stock. True to Baroque style, there’s nothing subtle about this statement piece!

Art Nouveau

Gustav Klimt is among the most famous artists of the Art Nouveau movement.

Gustav Klimt is among the most famous artists of the Art Nouveau movement.

Art Nouveau was most popular between 1890 – 1910. It can be recognized by intricate linear designs and flowing curves based on natural forms.  Art Nouveau is sometimes referred to as a “total” art style, spanning influence from architecture, graphic art, and interior design to most of the decorative arts including furniture, textiles, housewares, lighting, and (of course) jewelry!

The piece I chose to represent this era is a beautifully intricate stretch cuff with filigree detailing. The linear curves and curls – as well as the floral pattern – are reminiscent of the Art Nouveau design.

Art Deco

Empire State Building, New York, NY

The Empire State Building is one of the most famous examples of Art Deco architecture in the world.

Art Deco first appeared in France after World War I, and flourished internationally between 1920 – 1940.  Art Deco style is know for it’s liner and geometric characteristics, ornamental features, and bold colors.  It has sometimes been referred to as an “assertively modern” style. It is rich, alluring, and glamorous!

During the middle of the 20th century, Art Deco was commonly found in architecture, art – and even transportation.  This era had a tremendous influence on jewelry design, so I knew I had to feature our glamorous Art Deco style earrings! They’re fun and fresh despite being a throwback, but as we all know – fashion always comes full circle!

I love all three styles. It’s so hard to choose just one. I have grown up appreciating all forms of art.
Since I have to choose one, I will select Baroque.
Thank you for the opportunity

I love everything about the Baroque period. My favorite part of art and choir class in High School was when we talked about this specific period’s music, architecture, and art. Its just so ah inspiring and beautiful that it takes your breath away, especially the architecture.

Do i have to pick just one? i love all 3 styles and have many of my own pieces of jewelry in them along with pieces i was lucky enough to inherit from my grandmother. :) if i have to pick just one i think that i will have to go with the Art Nouveau period as i have more pieces that will go with the bracelet, but i really love the Baroque style the best. LOL!

I’m a sucker for all three styles!! Each has a different personality. For sheer glamour, Baroque is very eye-catching. I’m usually attracted to Art Deco styles, especially in architectural details, but I get that “wow” feeling from Art Nouveau. Klimt is one of my favorite painters, but for definitive Art Nouveau art, Alphonse Mucha takes top prize. :)

When I learn something while shopping for jewelry, it makes everything more beautiful cause it has a story to tell when someone remarks about the beauty of the jewelry. So of course I love the earrings (Where have you been hiding these earrings. I didn’t know that was the Empire State Building. Anyway Art Deco for me.
